Ethereum Foundation Announces Leadership Changes Amid Ecosystem Challenges

The Ethereum Foundation has unveiled a new leadership structure, appointing Hsiao-Wei Wang and Tomasz Stańczak as co-directors.

Wang, a core researcher at the Foundation, has been deeply involved in Ethereum’s development for the past seven years, focusing on Beacon Chain advancements and community engagement, particularly in Taiwan.

Stańczak, the former CEO of Nethermind—one of Ethereum’s major execution clients—brings a track record of leadership in scaling blockchain projects. While he maintains ties to Nethermind, he is stepping away from the CEO role.

Ethereum Faces Challenges as Foundation Appoints New Leaders

According to the March 1 announcement, the newly appointed co-directors will shape the foundation’s strategic direction while ensuring alignment with the broader Ethereum ecosystem.

Their leadership follows the transition of former CEO Aya Miyaguchi, who has moved into the role of chairman after leading the organization for seven years.

The leadership shift comes at a critical juncture for Ethereum. The network has faced ongoing price pressures, competition from alternative blockchain platforms touting superior scalability, and internal debates over the impact of Layer-2 scaling solutions on Ethereum’s core utility.

In a demonstration of its commitment to the ecosystem’s financial health, the Foundation recently allocated 45,000 ETH—valued at approximately $120 million at the time—into decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, including Aave, Compound, and Spark.
